Proudly serving Victorians since
1863, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital
is a state-wide teaching, training
and research health service. Specialising in
eye, ear, nose and throat (ENT)
medicine, it is Australia's pre-eminent specialty eye and ear hospital.
The Eye and Ear’s innovative fast-track cataract service has won a Silver Award in the Improving Access-Providing Timely and Accessible Health Services category at the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards on Thursday 10 September 2009.
The Fast Track Cataract Clinic was established in 2007 at the Eye and Ear to respond to increasing demand from the public for cataract surgery.
CEO Ann Clark said she was delighted to accept the award on behalf of the Eye and Ear. 'It is important that the Eye and Ear strives continuously to find ways to meet the needs of the community as the demand for eye services grows', Ms Clark said.
A rare collection that charts the search for a cure for blindness over the last 260 years turns 50 this year.
Housed at the Eye and Ear Hospital, the conjoint Eye and Ear/RANZCO museum has the most comprehensive collection of ophthalmic equipment of historical significance in Australia.
The collection includes spectacles designed by Benjamin Franklin in 1804 right through to the Kelman cryostylet cryoprobe, which was used in cataract surgery in the 1960s.
With your help, we can raise the extra funds needed to develop new treatments, research eye and hearing conditions and share our knowledge across the community.
72 year old Herbie from Broadmeadows is just one of our patients who has benefited from a new treatment.
Herbie had noticed his eyesight was getting worse and after years of driving a truck and getting dust in his eyes, he wasn’t surprised.
Our tests confirmed Herbie had AMD – age related macular degeneration. It’s the leading cause of blindness in Australia, and causes almost half of severe vision loss.
A trial for a new treatment for AMD saved Herbie’s sight.
“The vision in my right eye is 100 per cent and I have a bit of a blur in my left eye but I am as happy as a pig in mud! I reckon I’ve got another 30 years to look forward to and I need my sight for that.”
